Villefranche sur Mer, France Port
Villefranche sur Mer, France
With one of the most beautiful locations along the Cote D'Azur on the French Riviera, the origins of Villefranche stretch back to antiquity. The first evidence of a settlement in the area is of the Palaeolithic age. Many centuries later the Ligurians arrived from the Iberian peninsula, establishing dozens of villages devoted to agriculture, such as Villefranche, before moving eastward along the coast and settling in the region that is now Italy. A curious feature of this colonisation by the Ligurians was that, although they settled almost exclusively along the coast, the sea played a minor role in their activities. After the Ligurians came the Greeks, followed by the Romans, who developed a thriving community throughout the Cote D'Azur. The development was substantially aided by the building of a road, the 'Domitan', between 81 and 96AD, started by Titus Flavius Domitianus and continued by his brother Titus. The road was effectively an extension of the 'Aurelia', which extended to the sophisticated Roman province called Gaul. Following the Roman Empire , the region was subjected to a number of invasions by outside forces including the Vandals, Visigoths, Ostrogoths and, eventually, the Franks, who re-established the rule of law and the presence of Christianity. This stability was interrupted during a long occupation by the Saracens, as Villefranche fell under Muslim domination for a century, until the invading power was defeated at Poitiers by Charles Martel in 732AD. From the Middle Ages onwards, Villefranche was increasingly integrated within Provence, in the Maritime Alps region, becoming embroiled in a number of religious struggles. The modern-day character of Villefranche, once a small fishing village, has been radically transformed by the development of tourism over the past 50 years, although it maintains a healthy respect for the past. The basic structure of the city is the same as in previous centuries, with a charming mediaeval quarter of alleyways, red-tiled houses and upper level connecting bridges. The city centre features the garden squares of Place Felix-Poullan and Place de l'Eglise, popular meeting points for locals and visitors. A number of celebrities also live in the area, among them Tina Turner, who has a splendid villa in the Vinaigrier Hills and can regularly be seen in the city.
